It rained mad today. My friend and I were walking through the French Quarter when it all began and we sidestepped into a coffee shop to wade it out. After 15 minutes of sipping hot cocoa it finally subsided and we sidestepped out. What I love most about New Orleans are the buildings, mostly the facades, ornate delicate railings, railings holding potted plants and bicycles, paint peeling, cracks in concrete, broken shutters tilted and dangling, not so broken shutters, wooden glass doors, vibrant colors, muted colors, the wornout rust ridden oldness of everything. Makes for a great photo. Above are images from sunday's jaunt.
lower ninth ward, new orleans
today we drove around the lower ninth ward, an area devasted by hurricane Katrina. I’ve seen images on tv and web but the impact of being there was even more disconcerting. Most homes were abandoned, alone, in complete decay with roofs half fallen, broken windows, facades bent with some completely missing, weeds reaching high, fences and gates no longer a barrier. I was driven around mostly shooting from the car. My friend was worried about safety considering the crime rate. We had code words, "bunny" to hide the camera and "alligator" to quickly jump in and drive away.
Christina and Juan
Above are engagement shots of Christina and Juan. We photographed in the Mission, Dolores Park, and Pier 39. It was about a five hour shoot, including dinner. Best part was they were willing to go through a bunch of takes over and over and were open to ideas including pushing around recyling bins...too funny. They were a blast.
